// Pato by Liliana Porter is a limited edition etching from 2007, produced in an edition of 50 with 5 artist’s proofs (PA). This piece features a minimalist depiction of a small, solitary duck figure rendered in fine line work and shaded in black, with an accent of golden yellow on its beak. The simplicity of the composition gives the duck an introspective quality, as it sits against an empty background, casting a faint shadow. Porter’s characteristic use of minimalism and subtle symbolism invites viewers to reflect on themes of solitude, presence, and perhaps a sense of quiet resilience. The artwork’s delicate detailing enhances its contemplative atmosphere.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
