Porcelain with chromatic coating - Incised signature // Balloon Monkey (Blue) by Jeff Koons, created in 2017, is a striking porcelain sculpture coated with a vivid chromatic blue finish. This work, part of Koons' well-known balloon animal series, portrays a playful monkey formed in the style of balloon art. The elongated tail and rounded, reflective surfaces create a dynamic and engaging visual, evoking childhood whimsy and nostalgia. The glossy finish enhances the sculpture's vibrancy, allowing it to mirror its surroundings. As with other pieces in the series, Balloon Monkey (Blue) explores themes of consumerism and art as a luxurious object, while transforming an ephemeral form into a lasting, collectible sculpture.

What is Kitsch?

Kitsch is a term used to describe cheap, commercial, sentimental, or vulgar art and objects commonly associated with popular culture. The word is borrowed from German, where it originally means trash. Since the 1920s, kitsch has been used to denote the opposite of high art, often implying that the work lacks sophistication or artistic merit.
