Lacquered polyurethane resin - Impressed with the artist's name and title "Dom Pérignon BALLOON VENUS by Jeff Koons" on the suede interior lining - Published by Dom Pérignon // Jeff Koons’ Balloon Venus for Dom Pérignon is a vibrant sculpture crafted in lacquered polyurethane resin, designed to house a bottle of Rosé Vintage 2003. Inspired by the Venus of Willendorf, a Paleolithic figurine dating back to around 23,000 BC, Koons reimagines this ancient symbol of fertility as a modern-day goddess of love. The reflective, balloon-like curves of the sculpture embrace the viewer, blending timeless symbolism with contemporary aesthetics. Part of Koons’ Antiquity series, which began in 2008, the Balloon Venus playfully explores motifs from art history. For Dom Pérignon, the artist adapted the original statue into a smaller version that transforms into a functional yet luxurious object, embodying a perfect union of art, history, and exclusivity.

What is appropriation?
Appropriation in art involves using pre-existing images or objects with little or no modification. This technique has played a significant role across various art forms, including visual arts, music, performance, and literature. In visual arts, appropriation refers to the practice of adopting, sampling, recycling, or borrowing elements—or even entire forms—of existing visual culture, integrating them into new works to create meaning or critique.
