James Rosenquist’s Ice Point from Art and Sport, lithograph, shows a fragmented face with blue eyes and red geometric lines.

Lithograph in colors, on Arches Cover paper // Ice Point from Art and Sport by James Rosenquist is a lithograph that blends surrealism and abstraction. The artwork features a face with wide, vibrant blue eyes peeking through an array of sharp, geometric red and white lines that create a dynamic, fragmented effect. The eyes, coupled with subtle pink hues around the mouth, contrast against the more rigid elements, adding a playful, yet disorienting touch. The background is lightly dotted with pale blue, enhancing the feeling of movement and depth. Rosenquist’s work explores themes of visual perception and fragmented reality.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
