Sunglass Lens - Landing Net - Triangle

James Rosenquist, Above, lithograph; close-up of horse’s face overlaid with mechanical schematics and ABOVE in large, bold text.

// Above by James Rosenquist, created in 1981, is a lithograph that combines surrealism with elements of pop art, resulting in a layered and visually compelling composition. The image features a close-up of a horse’s face, with its open mouth prominently displayed, overlaid with a series of mechanical schematics, numerical labels, and the large word ABOVE in bold, transparent text across the top. This juxtaposition of organic and mechanical imagery creates a sense of discord and fascination, as if examining the intersection between nature and technology. Rosenquist’s unique approach invites viewers to explore the complexities of perception and interpretation, blending reality with abstraction. The contrasting textures and elements in Above suggest a commentary on human intervention in nature, as well as the symbolic layering of meaning within everyday objects.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
