Midnight, 1987 is a monumental aquatint and drypoint that plunges the viewer into the nocturnal depths of Frankenthaler's colour-field sensibility. Deep blues and blacks merge and separate across the expansive sheet, penetrated by thin veins of white and green that suggest moonlight filtering through darkness. The five-colour printing builds atmospheric layers of extraordinary subtlety, the aquatint grain dissolving hard edges into a luminous haze that recalls the stain technique of Frankenthaler's celebrated paintings. At nearly five metres wide, this is one of the most ambitious prints in the artist's catalogue — a nocturne of immersive scale that situates her printmaking firmly alongside the achievements of her painting.
