Rubber Bands (State II)

Ed Ruscha's Sin, lithograph, abstract folded forms and cylinder shapes on gradient background with small red and green sphere.

Published by Cirrus Editions, Los Angeles // Ed Ruscha's Sin is a limited edition lithograph from 1970, produced by Cirrus Editions in Los Angeles. The piece captures a minimalist arrangement featuring abstract forms reminiscent of folded paper and cylindrical shapes, set against a gradient background that transitions from light to dark. A single green and red sphere rests near the bottom of the composition, introducing a pop of color and intrigue. Ruscha’s work often explores the intersection of language and imagery, and while this piece is devoid of text, it hints at conceptual depth through its stark simplicity and ambiguous forms.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
