Lithograph in colors, on Rives BFK paper. Signed, Dated and Numbered in pencil. Published by the artist. Sea of Desire (1984) by Ed Ruscha is a lithograph that blends atmospheric abstraction with typographic precision. The composition features bold diagonal black bars crossing a gradient field of warm, orange-red hues, evoking a glowing sunset or artificial light filtered through blinds. Overlaid text spells out the phrase “Sea of Desire” in a geometric sans-serif font, subtly embedded into the image. Ruscha’s characteristic use of language and visual ambiguity suggests a tension between longing and obscured vision, typical of his work’s cinematic, enigmatic tone. This edition is limited to 25 prints, plus 9 artist's proofs.

What is New Topographics?
New Topographics is a term coined in 1975 by curator William Jenkins to describe a group of photographers whose work focused on formal black-and-white images of urban and industrial landscapes. Jenkins initially described their aesthetic as banal, but the photographers themselves argued that their compositions were as significant as those of natural landscapes, emphasizing the beauty in everyday, man-made environments.
