Color lithograph on calendared BFK Rives. Signed and Dated. Boiling Blood, Fly (1969) by Ed Ruscha is a striking color lithograph on calendared BFK Rives that fuses minimalism with surreal wit. A deep, saturated field of red-orange dominates the composition, evoking heat, intensity, and visceral emotion. Within this expanse, faint organic bubble-like forms emerge, subtly suggesting the work’s title. In the lower right, a small, sharply rendered fly interrupts the otherwise uniform space, adding an unexpected touch of realism and dark humor. Created in a small edition of 20, this piece captures Ruscha’s ability to merge conceptual sharpness with bold visual simplicity.

What is New Topographics?
New Topographics is a term coined in 1975 by curator William Jenkins to describe a group of photographers whose work focused on formal black-and-white images of urban and industrial landscapes. Jenkins initially described their aesthetic as banal, but the photographers themselves argued that their compositions were as significant as those of natural landscapes, emphasizing the beauty in everyday, man-made environments.
