Signed, numbered and dated on the back. // On a saturated black field, classical serif lettering in white stacks vertically down the sheet: THE / MEMORY / IS / THE / FIRST / THING / TO / GO. The forms are dignified, the message disarmingly human; Shrigley hand-cuts the type so that each letter retains the imperfect edge of the linoleum block. Printed on Somerset 300gsm, signed, numbered and dated on the verso, this is one of the most quietly affecting works in his recent output — a typographic monument to forgetting, and a confident piece to acquire for any serious print collection.
