Untitled B

Daniel Richter's Untitled C, 2016-2017 silkscreen with medieval-style figures illuminated by a hand holding a lighter in color.

// Untitled C by Daniel Richter is a 2016-2017 silkscreen print that combines elements of classical sculpture with contemporary intervention, creating a striking and layered composition. The artwork features a black-and-white image of intricate, medieval-style figures—likely inspired by classical reliefs or mythological depictions—rendered in high contrast. At the center, a hand holding a lighter appears in vivid color, with the flame casting a warm glow onto the figures, as if illuminating them in a dark, mysterious setting. This juxtaposition of ancient and modern imagery invites viewers to consider the themes of destruction, illumination, and revelation. The lighter’s flame suggests both an act of curiosity and a sense of danger, as if the past is being scrutinized or perhaps even threatened. Richter’s piece explores the dialogue between history and the present, provoking thoughts on the power of interpretation, intervention, and the often contentious relationship with historical narratives.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
