Untitled A

Daniel Richter's Untitled B, 2016-2017 silkscreen with fragmented nude male figures on white background, exploring dislocation and identity.

// Untitled B by Daniel Richter is a 2016-2017 silkscreen print that explores fragmented forms and the human figure through a minimalist, abstract lens. The artwork features delicate, line-drawn depictions of reclining nude male figures set against an expansive white background. The figures are arranged in angular, fragmented shapes, creating a sense of dislocation and distortion as they appear to intersect at various points. The pale yellow tones of the figures give the print a subdued, almost ethereal quality, while the unusual orientation and positioning provoke a sense of visual tension and ambiguity. Richter’s piece invites viewers to reflect on themes of identity, fragmentation, and the body’s relationship to space, using a restrained color palette and form to explore complex ideas about the human experience.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
