A key figure in the post-war Italian avant-garde, Bonalumi is best known for his "extroflections," a technique in which he shaped and manipulated canvases to create three-dimensional reliefs that extend beyond the traditional flat surface. His work is characterized by a rigorous exploration of form, space, and light, often using monochromatic palettes to emphasize the play of shadows and the tactile quality of the canvas. Bonalumi was associated with the Zero movement and worked alongside artists like Enrico Castellani and Piero Manzoni, with whom he shared a fascination for breaking the boundaries between painting and sculpture.
