Robert Therrien

Original Signed Artworks & Limited Edition Prints For Sale

Robert Therrien is an artist inspired by memory. Evoking the term's simplest most familiar forms, he aims for the viewer to rethink the meaning behind ordinary objects like a table leg or a wooden dining set. Though based mainly on his childhood memories, Therrien leaves the objects' interpretation open-ended. Given the ambiguous subject, Robert Therrien incorporates from a variety of art-movements.

« I try to stay with themes or objects or sources
I can trace back to my personal history. »

Robert Therrien
Particularly early on, his pieces were influenced by Minimalism, Pop Art, and Conceptualism. Elements from all three are evident in Therrien's work through its simplicity, uncompromising presentation, and focus on being "back-to-the-basic" in a new way.

« Sometimes people ask whether I am a romantic or a realist artist. I would hope that I fall between the two. . . »
Robert Therrien

As a result, Robert Therrien's vision leads him to use different types of mediums. While focusing on sculpting, other art forms such as painting, drawing, printmaking, and photography have also been included by Therrien throughout his career. Thus Therrien demonstrates his art is only limited to the wide interpretation that memory could hold. Read More

What is conceptual art?

Sometimes referred to as Conceptualism, this is an art form where the idea(s) or concept(s) behind the work take precedence over material concerns and traditional aesthetics. Many conceptual artworks can be created by anyone simply by following written instructions. The concept or idea is the most essential aspect of the artwork.
