Asides from his photography, Pierson is known for his word sculptures; using various found objects such as road signs, or signs from old diners and junkyards, Pierson places the mismatched letters together to create a sign depicting a singular word or phrase that takes on an entirely new meaning – often vibrant in colour and emanating traces of the origins of the signage, these word sculptures carry references of both Minimalism and Pop.

What is Lettrism?

Lettrism is an art form which uses letters, words and symbols to create an artwork. The art form was popularized in the 1950s in America, but was established in 1940s Paris. Lettrisme is the French spelling of the movement, and the French word for letter.
