Chintan Upadhyay

Original Signed Artworks & Limited Edition Prints For Sale

Chintan Upadhyay initially began his career as a painter, but has since gone on to create installations and sculptures – the surfaces of which he paints. Upadhyay’s work encompasses both abstract expressionism and traditional miniatures – his usage of flat tints of vivid colour pays homage to his native India, while the subjects and the style bridges the gap between tradition and modern art.

« Contemporary culture! The way we think. India boasted a culture of free thinking. This is what India was. »
Chintan Upadhyay
Among his sculptures, the Pet Shop project is perhaps his most recognised – the project is a series of sculptures comprised of ‘model babies’ for every season, Baby Fetish. Asides from his creative outputs, Upadhyay founded Sandarbh, a non-profit organization created to promote and raise awareness of the arts in the more rural areas of India – the foundation hosts several workshops and programs and is renowned for uniting artists all over India and also has an extensive reach across the globe. (Artist website)

What is Contemporary art from India?

What is Contemporary art from India?

Contemporary art from India dates from 1985 to the present. In India, this period is called the post-liberalization era, and includes artists who feel the freedom to work independent of traditional Hindu or social traditions for artworks, and use distinctly Indian materials and objects.
