Fuji Xerox copy on wove paper. Signed, dated and numbered lower margin. Reference : The Institut für moderne Kunst Nürnberg, Yoshitomo Nara: Lullaby Supermarket, Nürnberg, Germany, 2002 (another edition illustrated, pp. 66-71 and 194-195). Bijutsu Shuppan Sha, Yoshitomo Nara: The Complete Works Volume 1 -Paintings, Sculptures, Editions, Photographs, Tokyo, Japan, 2011 (another edition illustrated, plate E-1999-001 – E-1999-016, p. 308-309). Yoshitomo Nara’s No Fun! (from In the Floating World, 1999) is a Fuji Xerox print on wove paper that blends traditional Japanese imagery with contemporary pop sensibility. The composition centers on a stylized female figure reminiscent of ukiyo-e prints, dressed in a patterned kimono and rendered with delicate yet simplified features. Playful yet subversive elements—such as the small figure emerging from her hair and the exaggerated horn-like instrument—introduce humor and quiet tension. The bold red text “No Fun!” contrasts with the muted background, suggesting irony or emotional detachment. Produced in a limited edition of 50, the work reflects Nara’s exploration of innocence, rebellion, and cultural hybridity.

What is Superflat?
Superflat is an art movement founded by Takashi Murakami, heavily influenced by anime and manga. The term Superflat refers to the flattened forms found in Japanese animation, graphic art, fine arts, and pop culture, as well as the perceived superficiality of Japanese culture. Murakami's movement, which he self-proclaimed, is considered postmodern and critiques both the depth and shallowness of contemporary Japanese society. Superflat has been highly influential in bridging the gap between high art and popular culture.
