Size: 33x39 cm. (plate), 50x66 cm. (sheet) // Wifredo Lam’s Sans titre - XXe siècle plate #3, created in 1977, is an etching and aquatint that displays his signature surrealist style infused with Afro-Cuban mythology. This limited edition print, part of a series, portrays a surreal scene populated by elongated, abstracted figures that merge human and animal features. The composition is dominated by intricate forms and fluid lines, evoking a sense of ritualistic movement and mysticism. Lam’s use of stark contrasts, particularly the bold black figure on the right, creates depth and emphasizes the spectral quality of the beings. The earthy palette enhances the dreamlike atmosphere, reflecting Lam's exploration of cultural identity, spiritual symbolism, and the interplay between the natural and supernatural realms.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
