Colour lithograph on wove paper // Wifredo Lam's Le Regard Vertical #1, a 1973 color lithograph, epitomizes his surrealistic approach infused with Afro-Cuban cultural motifs. This limited edition print, produced in an edition of 180, presents a composition filled with elongated, abstract forms and mask-like faces, typical of Lam's work. Dominated by earthy and warm tones, the image features figures that seem both human and mythical, with elongated necks and mysterious gazes that evoke a spiritual presence. The yellow background adds a glow that frames the figures, enhancing the ethereal quality of the piece. Lam's work often explores themes of identity, mythology, and mysticism, and here he crafts a scene that feels rooted in both the physical and the spiritual worlds, blending African and Caribbean influences into an otherworldly vision.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
