Contre une maison sèche (red)

Wifredo Lam's Contre une maison sèche (light) etching with two surreal humanoid figures with skeletal limbs and muted tones.

Work signed on the bottom right. - Published by Societè Internationale d'Art WWe Siecie, Paris. - From portfolio: Contre une maison sèche, 1977 - Size: 33x39 cm. (plate), 50x66 cm. (sheet) // Contre une maison sèche (light) by Wifredo Lam, created in 1977, is an etching and aquatint print that embodies the artist’s fascination with mythical figures and surrealist forms. The artwork features two elongated, humanoid creatures with intricate, skeletal limbs and expressive gestures. One figure has wings, evoking a bird-like, otherworldly presence, while the other has angular, elongated shapes. The muted color palette and delicate lines give the composition an ethereal, dreamlike quality, reminiscent of both African and Caribbean spiritual imagery, which heavily influenced Lam's work. This piece reflects Lam’s exploration of identity, spirituality, and mysticism.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
