Portfolio of 11 sheets. Signed and numbered on the title page. Protest Portfolio (2014) by Richard Prince is a set of 11 inkjet prints, each measuring 61 × 55.9 cm, produced in an edition of 45 and signed and numbered on the first sheet. Published by Kunsthaus Bregenz for the exhibition It’s A Free Concert at Kunsthaus Bregenz (July 19 – October 5, 2014), the portfolio reflects Prince’s ongoing exploration of appropriation and cultural critique. Each sheet juxtaposes two contrasting photographs: one depicting moments of political protest or collective resistance, and another taken from aggressive erotic or pornographic imagery. These confrontational pairings create a dialogue of tension and contradiction, questioning power, spectacle, and the consumption of both politics and sexuality in contemporary visual culture. Works from this portfolio are held in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, and MoMA in New York.

What is conceptual art?

Sometimes referred to as Conceptualism, this is an art form where the idea(s) or concept(s) behind the work take precedence over material concerns and traditional aesthetics. Many conceptual artworks can be created by anyone simply by following written instructions. The concept or idea is the most essential aspect of the artwork.
