The Greeting Card Jokes #3: Canada Dry

Richard Prince 18 & Stormy offset lithograph showing composite image of a digitally blurred female face with DVD sticker.

Offset lithograph in colors with DVD sticker. Published by Downtown for Democracy, New York. Signed and dated to lower right ‘R Prince 2018’. 18 & Stormy by Richard Prince, created in 2018, is an offset lithograph in colors featuring a digitally blurred female face, composed as a soft-focus composite. Measuring 33 x 26 3/8 inches, the work reflects Prince’s signature approach to appropriation and cultural critique. The title—along with the added “DVD” sticker—suggests a nod to adult entertainment, raising questions about identity, media manipulation, and public perception. Blending digital imagery with conceptual irony, Prince presents a figure who appears familiar yet anonymous, simultaneously seductive and fabricated. The piece is part of an edition of 100 published by Downtown for Democracy.

What is East Village Art?

In 1981, Patti Astor opened the first art gallery in New York City's East Village, helping to launch the careers of various artists and musicians. The gallery started small but quickly gained popularity, contributing to the emergence of art movements such as Neo-Expressionism and Street Art in the area. The East Village became a hub for these new artistic expressions. However, the gallery closed in 1985 due to waning interest.
