Lithograph in colours on wove - Signed and numbered in pencil - Published by Hilger Edition, with their blindstamp - Printed by Carni, S. Giovanni Valdarno (with the blindstamp). - Image: 65 × 78 cm - Paper: 88 × 100 cm - Catalogue raisonné: Hilger, p. 156. // Mel Ramos’s Elephant Seal (2013) is a limited-edition lithograph that features a provocative, surreal juxtaposition of a nude woman and an elephant seal. The woman is seated playfully on the body of the seal, which is rendered in a smooth, glossy finish with exaggerated realism. Both the figure and the seal have a polished, almost sculptural quality, set against a warm orange background that emphasizes the striking contrast between the human form and the animal. Ramos’s characteristic pop art style blends sensuality with humor, challenging traditional notions of beauty and objectification by mixing iconic imagery with playful absurdity.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
