Untitled - (MR66-1194)

Man Ray's Symphony ou Orchestra, 1970 etching and aquatint, abstract geometric shapes in blue, orange, and green evoke musical rhythm.

Size of the image: 47.2 x 31.9 cm (18 5/8 x 12 5/8 in) - Size of the sheet: 74.6 x 54.9 cm (28 3/8 x 21 5/8 in) // Symphony ou Orchestra by Man Ray, a limited edition etching and aquatint from 1970, is an abstract, dynamic composition that combines bold geometric shapes and vibrant colors. Dominated by deep blues, fiery oranges, and subtle greens, the artwork brings together angular forms that intersect and overlap, evoking a sense of musical movement and rhythm. The arrangement of shapes, reminiscent of musical instruments and notes, creates a harmonious visual experience, as if the colors and lines are performing an orchestral symphony on the canvas. The layering of elements suggests depth and complexity, inviting the viewer to interpret the interplay of sound and form. This piece, part of an edition of 99, is a testament to Man Ray’s skill in translating auditory experiences into a visual format, showcasing his innovative approach within surrealism and abstraction.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
