La ballade des dames hors du temps

Man Ray's Le Concert, 1970 etching, depicts six nude figures with musical instruments, one climbing a ladder, in a surreal scene.

// Le Concert by Man Ray is a vibrant limited edition etching from 1970, presenting a whimsical scene of figures engaged in a lively, surreal performance. In this piece, six nude figures are arranged in various poses, some playing musical instruments and others in expressive stances, evoking a sense of playful, spontaneous movement. The central figure stands on a ladder reaching upwards, surrounded by others interacting with trumpets and drums, while a lone figure is seated, seemingly in contemplation. The minimalistic background focuses attention on the figures, emphasizing their dynamism and interaction. Ray's choice of simple, fluid lines and soft colors enhances the dreamlike quality of the scene, characteristic of his surrealist influence. This work is from an edition of 60, making it a rare collector's piece that captures Man Ray's innovative approach to form and imagination.

What is dada?

Also known as Dadaism, Dada was a literary and artistic movement that began in 1916 in Zurich, Switzerland. It emerged as a rejection of rationalism and nationalism, which were seen as contributing factors to World War I. The movement had political undertones and was strongly anti-war. Dada activities included demonstrations, gatherings, and the publication of literary and art journals that explored cultural and political topics.
