Hand colored Etching // Concierto II by Liliana Porter is a hand-colored limited edition etching from 2007, produced in an edition of 50 with additional artist’s proofs (PA). This piece portrays a small, enigmatic scene of a figure seated beside a bird perched on a small platform. Rendered with fine linework, the figure, appearing almost doll-like, sits in quiet contemplation with the bird close by, casting a shadow that adds depth to the composition. The minimal background isolates the subjects, creating an atmosphere of stillness and intimacy. Porter’s delicate approach captures a sense of whimsy and introspection, inviting viewers to interpret themes of companionship, silence, and the surreal poetry in everyday objects.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
