Jasper Johns – Flag (Moratorium), 1969 – Offset Print

Offset lithograph in colours.

Signed and numbered on the front.

'Flag (Moratorium)' by Jasper Johns is an offset print from 1969, measuring 52 × 72 cm. The American flag's standard red, white and blue is replaced here with orange and green — the latter rendered in a dense camouflage pattern across both the stripes and the field behind the stars. The canton is filled with an amber-orange ground carrying black five-pointed stars, while the stripes alternate between dark olive and a brushy, mottled green. The title locates the work precisely: the Vietnam Moratorium of October 1969, the largest single-day anti-war protest in American history, for which Johns made this print as a fundraising edition. The colour substitution is not abstract play but political shorthand — orange for Agent Orange, green for jungle and military fatigues — channelling Johns's long engagement with the flag motif, first established with his 1954–55 encaustic 'Flag', into direct anti-war statement.

What is minimalism?

What is minimalism?

Minimalism is a style in music and visual arts characterized by pared-down designs and simplicity. It began in Western art after World War II, gaining prominence particularly in American visual arts. Minimalism draws heavily on aspects of modernism and is often viewed as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, as well as a precursor to post-minimal art practices. Prominent minimalist artists include Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Dan Flavin.
