From the rare limited Artist Proof edition of XC -Published by Jean-Christophe Castelli New York -Suite of Leo Castelli 90th Birthday Portfolio -Original serigraph on paper -Excellent condition -Hand signed by Johns lower right
Comprised for Leo by Jasper Johns is a limited edition serigraph created as part of a portfolio to celebrate the 90th birthday of the influential art dealer Leo Castelli. This piece features a deep, gradient background transitioning from dark to light blue, evoking a twilight sky. Against this backdrop, constellations are delicately drawn, with simple, stick-like figures below gazing upwards, perhaps in wonder or contemplation. Johns, known for exploring symbols and iconic imagery, brings a sense of quiet reverence to this work, merging the celestial with the human. The simplicity of the figures and the night sky composition evoke themes of connection, curiosity, and homage.

What is minimalism?

What is minimalism?

Minimalism is a style in music and visual arts characterized by pared-down designs and simplicity. It began in Western art after World War II, gaining prominence particularly in American visual arts. Minimalism draws heavily on aspects of modernism and is often viewed as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, as well as a precursor to post-minimal art practices. Prominent minimalist artists include Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Dan Flavin.
