Polymer gravure etchings on paper. Hand-signed. James Turrell’s Aqua Oscura (Winter) (2015) is a polymer gravure etching that distills the quiet atmosphere of the winter landscape into an image of striking subtlety. Bare branches emerge from deep shadows and stretch across a luminous grey field, creating a delicate web of forms that appears suspended between reflection and reality. Part of Turrell’s Aqua Oscura series, the work reflects his lifelong interest in perception and the way light shapes our understanding of space. The muted palette and soft transitions evoke the stillness of winter, encouraging slow and attentive looking. Rather than presenting a conventional landscape, Turrell transforms a fleeting visual experience into a meditation on light, darkness, and the act of seeing itself. Hand-signed and issued in an edition of 30, the print brings the contemplative qualities of his immersive installations into an intimate graphic format.

What is minimalism?
Minimalism is a style in music and visual arts characterized by pared-down designs and simplicity. It began in Western art after World War II, gaining prominence particularly in American visual arts. Minimalism draws heavily on aspects of modernism and is often viewed as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, as well as a precursor to post-minimal art practices. Prominent minimalist artists include Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Dan Flavin.
