James Turrell Aqua Oscura Summer polymer gravure etching showing sunlit tree canopy surrounding bright sky viewed from below

Polymer gravure etchings on paper. Hand-signed. James Turrell’s Aqua Oscura (Summer) (2015) is a polymer gravure etching that transforms a view of treetops into a study of light, atmosphere, and perception. Looking upward through a dense canopy, the viewer encounters a luminous opening of sky framed by overlapping branches and foliage. The image oscillates between representation and abstraction, as sunlight filters through the leaves to create shifting patterns of brightness and shadow. Part of Turrell’s Aqua Oscura series, the work reflects the artist’s lifelong interest in how vision is shaped by light rather than by objects themselves. Through subtle tonal gradations and photographic precision, Aqua Oscura (Summer) encourages a contemplative awareness of the natural environment and the act of seeing. Hand-signed and issued in an edition of 30, the print translates Turrell’s immersive investigations into an intimate graphic format.

What is Hard Edge Art?

Hard Edge art is a style of abstract painting that became popular in the 1960s. It features areas of color separated by crisp, sharp edges that are painted with geometric precision. The term hard-edge painting was coined by art critic Jules Langsner to describe this approach, which contrasts with the softer, more fluid forms of other abstract styles.
