Howard Hodgkin – Interior with Figure, 1966 – Lithograph

'Interior with Figure' by Howard Hodgkin is a lithograph from 1966, measuring 50.3 × 65.4 cm, and hand-numbered from a limited edition. Three overlapping ovals in deep navy and cobalt anchor the left side of the composition, their translucent layering producing darker pooled tones where forms intersect. To the right, a vertical rectangle and a diagonal bar — both in pale and mid blue with black outlines — introduce a harder-edged geometry. A soft rectangular wash of sky blue descends from the top, while pale cream horizontals run across the upper field. Made early in Hodgkin's career, the print predates the looser, gestural brushwork for which he became recognised, instead showing his grounding in flat colour and deliberate formal arrangement — the figure of the title absorbed into shape rather than depicted.

Howard Hodgkin (United Kingdom, 1932–2017) was a British painter and printmaker renowned for his vibrant, abstract works that evoke emotional intensity. His distinctive style, characterized by bold brushstrokes and rich color palettes, often blurred the lines between representation and abstraction. Hodgkin's contributions to contemporary art were recognized with the Turner Prize in 1985.

What is Process Art?

What is Process Art?

Process Art is an artistic movement and creative approach where the focus is on the act of creation rather than the final product. The term process in this context refers to the various stages of art-making, including gathering, sorting, associating, and organizing materials and actions. This movement emphasizes the artistic journey and the human expression involved in creating art, rather than the finished piece itself. Process Art is driven by inherent motivation, intentionality, and the rationale behind the actions, viewing the creative process as the true artwork.
