Maria Helena Viera De Silva was a painter of dual French and Portuguese nationality. She was born in Lisbon and from an early was determined to become a renowned artist. Helena Viera De Silva was taught by some of the best artists of the early 20th century, including Fernand Leger and Stanley William Hayter. Helena Viera De Silva moved to Paris to pursue her career in 1930. There she met her husband, fellow painter Arpad Szenes. Helena Viera De Silva's paintings are generally counted as being part of the abstractionist school. Although the strongest influence on her work was Paul Cezanne she was also influenced by cubism, surrealism and Taschime. Due to the German invasion of France, Helena spent several years in Brazil, and then spent the rest of her life in Paris.
