Lithograph on Special Arjomari paper // 'Black/White/Black' by Ellsworth Kelly, created in 1970, exemplifies the artist's minimalistic approach to form and color. This lithograph, part of an edition of 75 printed on Special Arjomari paper, measures 107.4 x 75.7 cm. The composition features a geometric arrangement of black and white rectangular bands arranged within a trapezoidal tilt, generating a subtle dynamic tension. The sharp contrast between the monochrome tones emphasizes balance and precision, while the tilted shape disrupts conventional symmetry, encouraging viewers to explore visual equilibrium. As a hallmark of Kelly’s exploration of abstraction, the work offers a contemplative interplay between simplicity and complexity.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
