The Blue Guitar: title page (1976–77) by David Hockney introduces his celebrated series of etchings inspired by Wallace Stevens’ poem The Man with the Blue Guitar, which itself was influenced by Picasso. Rendered in etching and aquatint, the page features a stylized blue and red drawing of a guitar, framed by hand-drawn marks and handwritten text that narrates this chain of artistic inspiration. The childlike lettering and whimsical design evoke both playfulness and reverence. Printed on Inveresk mould-made paper, this signed edition of 200 (plus 35 artist proofs) was published by Petersburg Press and sets the tone for a suite exploring perception and transformation in art.
