Wood, sand, and glass - 10 1/5 in / 25.9 cm diameter // Daniel Arsham's Sand Circle (Blue) (2017) is a mixed-media sculpture that elegantly blends organic materials like sand with minimalist design. This piece, created from wood, sand, and glass, features a circular structure with delicate waves of blue sand that create a dynamic and shifting landscape within the glass enclosure. The simplicity of the round frame contrasts with the fluid, almost cosmic flow of sand, evoking the passage of time and the impermanence of nature. The blue hues add a calming, ethereal quality to the work, while the tactile nature of the sand invites contemplation. Arsham’s work often explores themes of time, decay, and transformation, and Sand Circle (Blue) beautifully encapsulates these ideas in a serene and contemplative object.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
