Rose Quarz, pink Selenit, Hydrostone. Not signed. Rose Quartz Eroded Bust of Antinous by Daniel Arsham, created in 2021, reimagines classical sculpture through a contemporary lens. Crafted from rose quartz, pink selenite, and hydrostone, the bust references the famed depictions of Antinous, a figure of beauty from ancient Roman art. Arsham partially “erodes” the surface, embedding crystalline formations where the material appears to decay. This deliberate fragmentation merges historical permanence with geological time, evoking themes of decay, memory, and transformation. The use of semi-precious minerals within classical forms is a hallmark of Arsham’s practice, blurring the boundary between relic and future artifact.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
