Damien Hirst's Six Pills (Large) C-print showing enlarged, colorful pharmaceutical pills displayed on mirrored shelves.

Chromogenic (C-print) // Six Pills (Large) (2008) by Damien Hirst is a limited edition C-print measuring 73 x 96.5 cm. Known for exploring life, death, and consumer culture, Hirst presents an array of oversized pharmaceutical pills, each meticulously detailed and displayed as if on a mirrored surface. The C-print medium amplifies the vibrancy and clarity, drawing attention to the pills’ glossy, almost hyper-realistic finish. This composition invites viewers to reflect on the pervasive role of pharmaceuticals in modern life, questioning the reliance on medication and the influence of the pharmaceutical industry. The work exemplifies Hirst’s ability to blend aesthetic allure with critical social commentary.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
