Aquatints and lavis // LB by Callum Innes, a limited edition print from 2022, uses mixed media techniques such as aquatints and lavis. The artwork, measuring 75 x 63 cm, presents an abstract composition divided into two primary sections. The left side is a solid black rectangle, while the right displays textured grayscale brushstrokes, creating a dynamic, almost woodgrain-like effect. The interplay between the deep black and the textured patterns in shades of gray emphasizes a contrast between stillness and movement. Innes’s minimalist approach focuses on the tension and harmony within the composition, inviting contemplation on the subtleties of form and texture.

What is minimalism?
Minimalism is a style in music and visual arts characterized by pared-down designs and simplicity. It began in Western art after World War II, gaining prominence particularly in American visual arts. Minimalism draws heavily on aspects of modernism and is often viewed as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, as well as a precursor to post-minimal art practices. Prominent minimalist artists include Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Dan Flavin.
