Emblemas 3 by Antonio Saura is a 1979 serigraph that continues the artist’s exploration of the human face as a powerful symbolic motif. The composition presents a distorted, mask-like head framed within a rectangular field, rendered through bold black gestures and layered tones of grey and white. Multiple eyes and fragmented facial features overlap and merge, creating an unsettling expression that conveys tension and psychological intensity. Saura’s energetic, calligraphic lines evoke the immediacy of drawing while maintaining a strong graphic structure characteristic of his printmaking. Associated with the Spanish postwar avant-garde and the El Paso group, Saura frequently used distorted faces as emblems of existential struggle and human vulnerability. Printed in an edition of 75 with additional proofs, the work demonstrates his raw, expressive visual language.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
