Shusaku Arakawa

Shusaku Arakawa (Japan, 1936–2010) was a visionary artist and architect whose work challenged conventional perceptions of space and existence. Co-creator of 'reversible destiny' architecture, he blended conceptual art with experimental design to provoke thought about life and mortality. Arakawa’s groundbreaking works, often in collaboration with Madeline Gins, continue to influence contemporary art and architecture.

What is conceptual art?

Sometimes referred to as Conceptualism, this is an art form where the idea(s) or concept(s) behind the work take precedence over material concerns and traditional aesthetics. Many conceptual artworks can be created by anyone simply by following written instructions. The concept or idea is the most essential aspect of the artwork.
