Li Wei

Original Signed Artworks & Limited Edition Prints For Sale

A contemporary Chinese artist, Li Wei is recognized for his combination of performance art and photography, the result of which often depicts a somewhat dangerous reality – his Fall series is one example of his works of this kind. Many of Wei’s work features him in what appears to be a gravity-defying position, but he states that these shots make use of wires, mirrors, scaffolding and acrobatics.

« The process of making a painting, for me, is driven by intuition and imagination. »
Li Wei
Initially, Li Wei had planned to become a painter, but eventually conceded that he preferred to express himself in a more literal way, stating: “Only performance art offers a chance to experience an action’s message through one’s own body.”

« In my work, I'm searching for a visual language which combines representation and abstract elements to address my own hybrid identity »
Li Wei

Although his work is impressive for the trickery and the stunts, it does also analyse and challenge the human perception of reality – through his use of mirrors, Wei is able to express his own personal thoughts, experiences and take on his own reality. (Artist website) Read More

What is Performance Art?

What is Performance Art?

Performance presented within the context of fine art that is traditionally interdisciplinary. It may be scripted or unscripted, random or orchestrated carefully; spontaneous or may carefully be planned without the participation of the audience. Performance can be through the media or live and the artist performing can either be present or not. The situation can involve the four basic elements: space, performer's body/his presence through a medium, time and performer-audience relationship. Artwork constitutes actions of a group or an individual at a particular time and space.
