A contemporary Chinese artist, Li Wei is recognized for his combination of
performance art and photography, the result of which often depicts a somewhat dangerous reality – his Fall series is one example of his works of this kind. Many of Wei’s work features him in what appears to be a gravity-defying position, but he states that these shots make use of wires, mirrors, scaffolding and acrobatics. Initially, Li Wei had planned to become a painter, but eventually conceded that he preferred to express himself in a more literal way, stating: “Only
performance art offers a chance to experience an action’s message through one’s own body.” Although his work is impressive for the trickery and the stunts, it does also analyse and challenge the human perception of reality – through his use of mirrors, Wei is able to express his own personal thoughts, experiences and take on his own reality.
