The American dream

Robert Indiana’s Golden Age of the Future, 1976 silkscreen print with symbolic triangle, all-seeing eyes, and text on democracy and America's future.

// Golden Age of the Future by Robert Indiana, created in 1976, is a silkscreen print that reflects themes of American ideals and socio-political aspirations. The central design features a triangle inscribed within a circle, with symbolic text and imagery, including a series of eyes at the triangle's center, reminiscent of the all-seeing eye motif found in American iconography. Surrounding the triangle are phrases like The rulers are the servants, The people their sovereigns, and In free government, reflecting democratic values and a call for accountability in governance. The prominent dates, 1776 and 2076, suggest a bridge between the founding principles of the United States and a hopeful future vision. The text The Golden Future of America underscores Indiana’s optimistic yet critical view on America's trajectory. This limited edition work uses bold colors and geometric shapes to create a powerful, almost emblematic composition.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
