Des idées et des ombres 1

Pol Bury’s Tour Montparnasse, 1990 etching of twisting skyscraper in Paris, creating a surreal effect against a city backdrop.

// Pol Bury's Tour Montparnasse, a 1990 etching, offers a surreal reimagining of one of Paris's iconic skyscrapers. In this print, the Tour Montparnasse is depicted with an undulating, twisting structure that seems to defy architectural stability, as though the building were bending and flowing like a liquid. This warped portrayal creates a stark contrast against the rigid, familiar lines of the surrounding urban environment. The black-and-white palette, combined with the meticulously detailed etching technique, enhances the surreal quality, giving the skyscraper an organic, almost otherworldly appearance. Known for his explorations in kinetic and optical art, Bury uses this piece to challenge conventional perceptions of structure and form, making the viewer question the stability of what is typically seen as solid and unchanging. Part of a limited edition of 70, this work exemplifies Bury’s unique approach to transforming the urban landscape into a fluid, dreamlike vision.

What is kinetic art?

Kinetic art is an international movement that emerged in the 1920s and gained prominence in the 1960s, referring to art that involves both apparent and real motion. It encompasses any medium that includes movement, either relying on actual motion for its effect or being perceived as moving by the viewer. Early examples include canvas paintings designed to create optical illusions of movement. Today, kinetic art often refers to three-dimensional figures and sculptures, such as those operated by machines or those that move naturally. The movement covers a variety of styles and techniques that frequently overlap.
