Man Ray’s Queen of Spades, 1970 etching with a split playing card design, combining classic and abstract elements in white on a dark background.

// Man Ray's Queen of Spades, a 1970 etching, exemplifies the artist’s surrealist approach and fascination with subverting traditional iconography. This limited edition print, from an edition of 120, presents the Queen of Spades playing card in a reimagined form. The artwork is split diagonally, revealing two contrasting halves: the left side shows the typical decorative details of a playing card, while the right side introduces abstract and textured elements that interrupt the symmetry. The minimalist white lines against a dark background give the piece an ethereal quality, blending the familiar with the enigmatic. Man Ray's work often challenges perception, and here he blurs the line between reality and imagination, making the Queen of Spades an intriguing emblem of mystery and duality.

What is Readymade?

Readymade is the term coined by French artist Marcel Duchamp to describe artworks created from manufactured objects. Duchamp selected ordinary, functional items that he felt had visual indifference, turning them into art simply by choosing and presenting them in a new context. This concept challenged traditional notions of art and continues to influence artists who adopt similar approaches today.
