Noire et Blanche

Man Ray's Pynape, 1975 marble sculpture, with a tall cylinder and three spherical balls, minimalist and suggestive design.

Presse-papier à Priape - signed MR, and numbered ' (lower edge) - white marble - cylinder: 20½in. (52cm.) high - Conceived in 1920 and executed in 1972 by the Galerie Alexandre Iolas, in an edition of 500. The original object that was conceived in 1920 has been destroyed. One hollow marble cylinder and three identical marble balls (4) // Pynape by Man Ray, a marble sculpture conceived in 1920 and produced in its final form in 1972, exemplifies the artist's playfulness with form and function. This piece, crafted in white marble, consists of a tall, hollow cylindrical column topped with a spherical marble ball, accompanied by two identical spheres on the ground beside it. Originally conceived as a presse-papier à Priape (Priapus paperweight), the minimalist geometry of the sculpture contrasts with its subtly suggestive form, evoking themes of balance, elegance, and duality. Its smooth marble finish enhances the sculpture’s timeless and classical aesthetic. This edition, made by Galerie Alexandre Iolas, captures Man Ray's unique ability to infuse ordinary objects with an enigmatic and artistic quality, blending Surrealism with a modernist approach.

What is avant-garde?

Avant-garde refers to innovative and experimental ideas in the arts that challenge established norms and conventions. Originating from the French term for advance guard, it describes both the movement and the artists who push the boundaries of creativity, often exploring new techniques, forms, and concepts. The avant-garde has been a driving force in various art movements throughout history, such as Dadaism, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism, continually reshaping the landscape of art and culture.
