Man Ray's La Fortune II lithograph from 1973 depicts a surreal tilted billiard table against a desert with colorful clouds above.

Colour lithograph // La Fortune II by Man Ray is a color lithograph from 1973, showcasing the artist's surrealist approach through an imaginative composition. The artwork features a billiard table that stands tilted against a vast, desert-like landscape, creating a sense of imbalance and otherworldliness. The table's green surface contrasts sharply with the barren terrain, and the presence of two balls—one red and one white—adds to the surreal effect. Above, brightly colored clouds in shades of red, blue, yellow, and green float against a muted sky, defying realistic atmospheric conventions. This dreamlike piece exemplifies Man Ray’s talent for blending the familiar with the fantastical, inviting viewers to explore his playful and enigmatic world.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
