Heavy Petting

Gilbert & GEORGE | Dead | Offset Print, 1986 — available on Composition Gallery

Offset lithograph on heavy wove paper. Not signed. // Against a deep cobalt night dotted by a single yellow moon, jagged green thistles fall across the sky like falling weeds; below, two red-suited figures of Gilbert and George stand quietly side by side, heads bowed. 'DEAD' is stamped at the lower right corner. Offset lithograph on heavy wove paper. The mood is elegiac — a funereal twin to the duo's life-affirming pictures — and shows their full range, from carnival to vigil. To acquire it is to bring home one of the most contemplative panels in their celebrated 1986 series.

What is Performance Art?

Performance Art is a genre of fine art that is traditionally interdisciplinary, involving various art forms. It can be scripted or unscripted, random or carefully orchestrated, spontaneous, or meticulously planned, with or without audience participation. Performance Art can be presented live or through media, with the artist either present or absent. It typically involves four basic elements: space, the performer’s body or presence through a medium, time, and the relationship between performer and audience. The artwork consists of actions performed by an individual or group in a specific time and space.
