Gilbert & GEORGE | Black God | Offset Print, 1986 — available on Composition Gallery

Offset lithograph on heavy wove paper. Not signed. // On a grid of nine panels, a stretched cruciform of thorny black runs from top to bottom; a Black male face crowns it like Christ Pantocrator, two more faces flank the arms, and red roses bloom in the four corner cells. The duo's appropriation of Catholic iconography drives toward what they called 'religion for everyone', merciless and inclusive at once. Offset lithograph on heavy wove paper from their celebrated 1986 series. To acquire a Gilbert & George multiple is to live with the most uncompromising British conceptual practice of the post-war era.

What is Performance Art?

Performance Art is a genre of fine art that is traditionally interdisciplinary, involving various art forms. It can be scripted or unscripted, random or carefully orchestrated, spontaneous, or meticulously planned, with or without audience participation. Performance Art can be presented live or through media, with the artist either present or absent. It typically involves four basic elements: space, the performer’s body or presence through a medium, time, and the relationship between performer and audience. The artwork consists of actions performed by an individual or group in a specific time and space.
