Damien Hirst Mescaline lenticular print; colorful dots on white background, creating shifting, dynamic visual effect.

Lenticular // Damien Hirst's Mescaline (2014) is a lenticular print that forms part of his iconic series exploring pharmaceutical aesthetics. The piece features an arrangement of multicolored dots evenly spread across a white background. The lenticular technique gives the artwork a dynamic, almost three-dimensional quality, making the dots appear to shift and change as the viewer moves around it. This effect enhances the visual impact, echoing the hallucinogenic experience implied by the title. Hirst’s use of vibrant colors and repetitive patterns reflects his fascination with the intersection of art, medicine, and perception, inviting viewers to contemplate the influence of chemicals on human experience.

What is Uncanny?

The Uncanny is a concept described by psychologist Sigmund Freud as the eerie or unsettling feeling that arises when something familiar is presented in a strange or unfamiliar way. Surrealist artists, who aimed to reveal the subconscious and merge it with reality, often utilized this concept by combining familiar objects in unexpected and bizarre ways. This approach created a sense of discomfort or unease, challenging the viewer's perception of reality.
